The work

Brickwork for Hanwell homes

Hanwell is a short run for us, so a look at a brickwork job here is a visit rather than a day of travel priced into the quote. We work across W7 and out into Ealing, Southall, Brentford, Acton, Greenford.

Good brickwork is invisible. Get the brick, the bond and the mortar right and a rebuilt section disappears into the elevation. Get them wrong and a patch of modern red brick in a lime-mortared London stock wall is the first thing anyone sees.

We take on new brickwork, rebuilds where a wall has bulged or cracked, and repairs to spalled and frost-damaged brick. That covers garden and boundary walls, piers, gables, arches over openings and the reveals around new windows and doors.

What's included

What brickwork covers

  • Brick matching

Sourced to match the existing brick in colour, texture and size as closely as it is made.

  • Mortar matching

Mix and colour matched, and lime rather than cement where the wall needs to breathe.

  • Rebuilds

Cracked, bulging or leaning sections taken down and rebuilt on sound foundations.

  • Brick replacement

Spalled and frost-blown bricks cut out individually and replaced.

  • Arches and lintels

Failed arches supported and rebuilt, and lintels replaced where they have rusted or sagged.

  • Piers and copings

Gate piers, capping and coping renewed so the top of the wall sheds water.

The options

Brickwork in Hanwell: which system

We fit all of these across Hanwell. Which one suits depends on the roof you have, the span, and what you want out of it - so here is the honest difference between them.

Garden and boundary walls

Most leaning garden walls in West London were built without enough foundation, or without piers to stiffen a long run. Once a wall starts to move there is no repointing it back to straight, so it comes down and goes back up on a proper footing.

The other failure point is the top. A wall with no coping, or with a cracked cement capping, takes water straight into the brickwork. Frost then blows the face off the brick. A coping with a drip, over a damp proof course, stops it.

Foundations and piers
Dug and concreted to suit the wall height and the ground, with piers built into long runs and at gates.
Copings and cappings
Brick-on-edge, stone or concrete coping over a damp proof course, with a drip.
Retaining walls and rebuilds
Built with the drainage the retained ground needs; leaning walls taken down and rebuilt.

The process

How a brickwork job runs in Hanwell

  1. Step 01

    Look at the wall

We work out whether the crack is movement, a failed lintel or just weathering, because the fix differs.

  2. Step 02

    Match materials

Brick and mortar options shown to you before anything is ordered.

  3. Step 03

    Support and rebuild

Openings needled and propped where required, then rebuilt in the correct bond.

  4. Step 04

    Point and clean down

Joints finished to match, brickwork cleaned off, and the site cleared.

Why TJM

Why Hanwell customers use us for this

  • Bond and mortar are matched, not just the brick colour.
  • Lime mortar used where soft brick calls for it, instead of hard cement.
  • We tell you if a crack is structural movement that needs an engineer, rather than papering over it.
  • The same person does the brickwork and the roof detail where the two meet.

The price

Brickwork costs

What brickwork costs comes down to what you actually have, not a price list. Two jobs that sound identical can be an hour of work or a week of it, which is why we do not price roofing over the phone. We come and look, then put a figure in writing.

  • Area of brickwork, and whether it is new build or a rebuild.
  • How difficult the brick is to match, and whether reclaimed brick is needed.
  • Whether propping, needling or a new lintel is involved.
  • Access and scaffolding, especially at gable height.

  • Bond and mortar are matched, not just the brick colour.
  • Lime mortar used where soft brick calls for it, instead of hard cement.

Questions

Brickwork in Hanwell: common questions

Still not sure? Ring and ask. It is usually quicker than typing it out, and you will speak to the person who would do the work.

Can you match my bricks exactly?

Often very closely, and on a weathered wall reclaimed brick usually beats new. Some Victorian bricks are no longer made in that size or colour, so we will show you the nearest options before starting.

There is a crack above my window. Is that serious?

It is often a failed lintel or a rusted steel spreading as it corrodes, which is repairable brickwork. If the crack pattern suggests actual structural movement we will say so and recommend a structural engineer rather than guess.

Do you build garden walls?

Yes, including boundary walls, retaining walls, piers and copings. Foundations and coping detail are what make a garden wall last, so both go into the quote.

How long does new brickwork take to dry out?

Mortar is set within days but a new wall carries construction moisture for weeks. Avoid painting or sealing new brickwork straight away, because trapping that moisture in is what causes early problems.

Can you lay bricks in winter?

Bricklaying stops below about three degrees, because mortar will not gain strength and frost damages it as it sets. We will tell you if a cold spell is moving your dates rather than lay it and hope.
