Slate work on period roofs
A slate roof usually fails at its fixings long before the slate itself wears out. Nail sickness is the common story: iron nails corrode, slates start to slide, and someone clips a lead tingle on to hold them. A roof with tingles across it is telling you it wants re-slating.
We re-slate in natural Welsh or Spanish slate, and in fibre-cement where budget or weight makes that the sensible choice. Headlap is set for the pitch, slates are holed and nailed in copper, and hips, valleys and abutments are finished in lead.
